If you’ve ever thought about planning engagement photos in the snow, Mt Hood Government Camp is one of those places that instantly makes it feel worth it. Catherine actually reached out to me within six hours of getting engaged, which still makes me smile thinking about it!! She already had a clear vision, and she knew she wanted a snowy setting. So even though I don’t typically take on snow sessions, this one felt different from the start.
It also felt like one of those full circle moments. I had photographed Austin’s sister’s family session on the Oregon Coast the summer before, and she was the one who referred Catherine to me. Then on top of that, one of Catherine’s bridesmaids is my fiancé’s little cousin. It really is such a small world, and honestly, those kinds of connections always make the experience feel more personal from the beginning.

Mt Hood Government Camp has this quiet, open feeling that works so well for engagement sessions. Because we met at 8am, we had the entire space to ourselves for the first hour. That alone made such a difference. There’s something about fresh snow and no crowds that lets you fully settle into the moment without distractions.
The light was soft, and everything around us felt still. Instead of rushing through locations, we were able to move slowly and let things unfold naturally. I always tell my couples that the best photos happen when you’re not overthinking every step, and this was exactly that kind of session! Catherine and Austin leaned into the experience, and you could feel how excited they were for this next season of their life.

What stood out most during this Mt Hood Government Camp session was how intentional everything felt. Even though this was their engagement shoot, it already felt like a reflection of the kind of wedding day they are planning. And now I get to photograph their wedding this October in The Dalles, Oregon, which will be held on Austin’s parents’ property! That just adds another layer of meaning to everything. Getting to document both the quiet beginning and the celebration that follows is always such an honor.
If you’ve been going back and forth about doing a snow session, this is your sign to just go for it. It might not be something I do all the time, but when it comes together like this, it is absolutely worth it!

If Mt Hood Government Camp has been on your mind, I would say lean into it. Timing matters, so early mornings will give you that peaceful, empty feel. Also, layering outfits and choosing tones that complement the snow can really elevate the overall look without feeling forced. At the same time, don’t overthink it! The best sessions always come from letting go a little and allowing the environment to guide the experience. That’s when things start to feel real, and that’s when the photos truly come to life.
If you’re dreaming of your own Mt Hood Government Camp engagement session or planning something that feels just as personal, I would love to be a part of it. Reach out and let’s start planning something that feels true to you!
